Gear sunsetting: My thoughts and suggestions

The problem (apologies for a long read):
With the introduction of Beyond Light came gear sunsetting, a feature which has phased out various weapons and armor from the game by putting a punishing power cap that prevents them from being used in most activities.
While gear sunsetting may have good reasons on paper, it translates poorly in game. The truth is, it only forces players to abandon hard earned weapons and armor they’ve obtained in the past. Additionally, it heavily limits the amount of weapons in circulation. Due to the seasonal system, only weapons from up to 3 seasons ago (Season of Dawn) are viable, half of which are simply “refreshed” variants of weapons reintroduced in another season (ex. Gnawing Hunger sunset and then refreshed in Season of Arrivals).
Not only is that a terribly small amount of weapons, but this is counterintuitive as is forces players to grind for guns they’ve already obtained, only for those guns to also be sunset in a not so distant season. If half the guns in circulation are just refreshed variants, wouldn’t it be easier to just not sunset those weapons at all?
On top of that, such a large portion of weapons being sunset makes it so that even Shadowkeep weapons are no longer viable. There is no point to grinding out Moon quests if the weapons you obtain are also sunset. The point of sunsetting and vaulting was to remove gear from activities that are no longer played, but the way this system works in Destiny 2 makes it so that drops from CURRENT CONTENT such as the Dreaming City and Shadowkeep are no longer viable in any way. The immediate solution would be to reissue weapons and armor from these destinations, but that just ties into my previous point: why refresh all these weapons when they could simply not be sunset at all?
Not to mention that sunsetting makes it so that New Light players who buy the Forsaken and Shadowkeep expansions get nothing of real value, as the grand majority of gear obtained from those expansions’ destinations are sunset. New Light is supposed to be a good experience friendly to new players, and yet sunsetting makes the experience inherently not friendly. Destiny veterans may have gotten their money’s worth for these expansions, but new players certainly have and will not if sunsetting continues.
Considering all that was vaulted in Beyond Light, sunsetting weapons on top of that makes it so that the DLC removed more content than it added, and quite frankly, the world loot pool of viable gear is tiny in comparison to how it was last season. Sunsetting is doing far more harm than good. Not only that, but many players have spent money on legendary weapon ornaments such as for Austringer or Recluse. Having those weapons go away makes players feel as though their money has been wasted.
I understand the idea of encouraging players to get new weapons rather than sticking to the same old loadout forever, but taking gear away from players is not the way to go. Simply put, there aren’t enough new guns introduced each season to have a robust enough roster, and forcing players to abandon old gear and search for new ones is counterintuitive when half the “new” guns are just sunset guns from previous seasons “reissued” in a new season. Even then, certain activities still drop sunset gear, which is completely pointless since that gear is rendered entirely useless due to the power cap. Due to this, even activities that weren’t vaulted are a waste of time.
So, what is my solution?
I propose that all Year 2+ gear has it’s power cap removed, allowing them to be infused to the seasonal power cap. Additionally, all “reissued” weapons should show the symbol of their original season, as to avoid confusion. (Ex. Reissued Gnawing Hunger from Season of Arrivals should display the original Season of the Drifter symbol).
Static roll Year 1 weapons, such as old regional weapons, vendor weapons, original Leviathan guns or original Escalation Protocol weapons remain sunset and completely unobtainable outside of collections. Destiny 1's sunsetting system was yearly, and was mainly put in place to give the game a fresh start after lots of big changes going from year 1 to year 2. This would be replicating that system by sunsetting TRULY obsolete gear while allowing random rolled gear to remain.
Additionally, Year 1 sunset gear should be split into it’s own category in collections (with the exceptions of MIDA mini tool and Drang), called “Legacy Gear” with weapons from Year 1 that are sunset and no longer obtainable being shown, rather than the arguably ugly and messy mix of year 1 and year 2+ gear shown in the current collections. I feel like the current weapons tab in the current collections can be confusing due to the mix of random gear and static gear.
Armor sunsetting should also be reverted. The upcoming ornament system helps lessen the blow of losing access to older armors, but the fact remains that as long as armor sunsetting stays, players will be forced to abandon armor sets just to grind for "new" reissued ones.
I believe that older armors not having access to newer seasonal mods is incentive enough for seeking new armor sets, rather than forcing the choice away from players and making their armor sets obsolete. Additionally, this would allow players the choice to keep using an older armor piece if they prefer older seasonal mods for their build.
There would be a few exceptions to armor sunsetting of course, which would remain with a power cap. All armor 1.0 gear still in circulation would remain sunset, treated similarly to static roll Y1 weapons.
“Vaulted” armors or armors that remain unobtainable would appear in the “legacy” collections tab. This would include regional armors from sunset planets, escalation protocol armor, original Leviathan raid amor, raid lair armors, meditation armors, menagerie armor, forge armor, faction rally armor, reckoning armor, and original trials of the nine armor. All armor 1.0 gear wouldn’t be purchasable in any way. Armor 2.0 versions of this armor would still be purchasable from collections and wouldn’t be sunset, but they wouldn’t be obtainable anywhere in the world.
Another big reason for sunsetting was to put powerful pinnacle weapons to rest. However, I believe that there are better solutions for old pinnacle weapons rather than sunsetting them and making them fully obsolete.
(Additionally, why would anyone spend their rare materials on a pinnacle weapon at the new kiosk if it is rendered obsolete by sunsetting?)
Pinnacle weapons specifically could be treated as exotics, having their own “tier”, appearing with a “Pinnacle weapon” title rather than just being a standard legendary. Additionally, just like exotics, you’d only be able to equip one at a time, thus avoiding notorious combos such as Recluse and Mountaintop. IF additional balancing is needed, players wouldn’t be able to equip an exotic and pinnacle weapon at the same either. This would reduce the relevance of pinnacles without fully sunsetting them out of the game.
RITUAL weapons on the other hand, would also have their sunsetting lifted, but wouldn’t have the equipping limitations of Pinnacles, since they don’t have fully unique perks and arguably aren’t as powerful.
Weapons from vaulted activities (raids, black armory, menagerie, etc) would still be unobtainable, but players who opted to keep those weapons would still be able to use them freely, as they wouldn’t be sunset.
In light of the changes outlined above, and Year 1 sunset gear being moved to their own tab in the collections, some changes should be made to collections for Year 2+ gear. There is no real point to having a big list of the gear you’ve obtained if you can’t reacquire it in any way.
As such, I believe Year 2+ gear should be repurchase-able from collections, even if it is random rolled. HOWEVER, players would have no control over the roll of weapons, and repurchased random roll armor would drop with typically low stats (mid 40s for regular armor, mid to high 50s for “endgame” armor), similar to how purchasing exotic armor from collections works. It would still be incentivized to seek gear out in activities to get better stats.
On top of that, the price for repurchasing a specific piece of gear over and over would increase dramatically so that players can’t just buy a gun from collections over and over until they get a god roll.
Even still, I believe this system would be helpful for players that dismantled their gear due to sunsetting, especially for that of gear from vaulted activities. It would also grant a bit more of a use for collections, other than just being a glorified checklist of gear.
A last few set of changes I would make are focused mainly on vendors and the world loot pool.
Recently, world loot drops were modified so that guns from different activities can be rewarded by other vendors (For example, have you ever noticed Shaxx awarding you a Gnawing Hunger, a Gambit weapon, after completing his bounties? Or have you noticed how you've sometimes received a Long Shadow, a strike sniper, out in the wild?)
I feel this is a result of sunsetting making the loot pool of viable gear so small, that vendors must share weapons in order to make the system work.
If sunsetting were reverted, these weapons should go back to dropping specifically from their respective activities, in order to bring back the incentive to play a certain activity to gain a certain weapon or armor.
Previously sunset weapons should be reintroduced to the loot pool.
Also, a feature I think would be useful is to be able to do a "preview" at each vendor in order to see what weapons are obtained from their respective activities or weekly rewards.
In conclusion:
Once again, I apologize for the long post, but this is a big issue to me and to many other players in the community, and I feel like I have to speak out about this. Making this post is the only way I can think of to put this feedback out there.
I love Destiny 2, really I do, but sunsetting is a BIG issue and I think it will only become more apparent how problematic it really is as we lose more and more gear in the coming seasons, such Season of Dawn weapons, Seventh Seraph weapons (which are integral for Warmind cell builds), and eventually, even Season of Arrivals weapons. Because of the seasonal system by which sunsetting operates, we'll lose gear extremely quickly, and not enough new weapons are added to fill in those gaps, leading to more and more tedious reissued gear. Who knows, in 3 or 4 seasons, we could even be seeing BEYOND LIGHT weapons sunset, forcing us to grind for more and more reissued gear pointlessly.
This sunsetting system is damaging the game. It is discouraging players. It is making expansions pointless for new players. It is damaging existing content still in the game. It is forcing players to give up their hard earned gear. This isn't a beneficial or enjoyable system. It's just a poor excuse to keep players grinding for the same old gear.
Please Bungie, if you are reading this, and if you care about your game and its player base, please do something about sunsetting and hopefully remove the power caps you have introduced with Beyond Light. This system is hurting the game, and it's doing far more harm than good.
My ideas are only suggestions you could take into consideration, but whichever way you go about this, I firmly believe that removing sunsetting must be done, and I know a lot of members of this community share this perspective.
