Context: The White Consuls, an Ultramarines successor chapter, have turned the Boros system into a shining beacon of civilization, ensuring economic prosperity, military strength and even a degree of civil liberty. In this excerpt, a White Consul Space Marine pays an IG regiment a planet-side visit, and he comes bearing a special present.
I really like this excerpt, because it does such a good job of showing that the White Consuls get it. They understand, as Guilliman does, that Space Marines were meant to be humanity's greatest protectors as well as its greatest warriors, and that the duty of a Space Marine extends beyond the battlefield. Where other Space Marine chapters might view regular humans as blood bags (Knights of Blood), cannon fodder (Marines Malevolent), collateral damage (Minotaurs), or weaklings (Iron Hands), the White Consuls treat the humans under their rule with respect.
The White Consuls ruled with a benevolent hand, and the citizens of the Boros system – all eighteen inhabited planets and two-dozen colonised moons and asteroids – were afforded liberties and a quality of life undreamed of in many regions of the Imperium. Civil unrest was all but unheard of.
Two Consuls ruled Boros – the Proconsul Ostorius, and his Coadjutor, Aquilius. The highest authority in all matters military and political, they were regarded with awe bordering on worship by the bulk of the Boros citizenry. Such devotion was not officially encouraged, but neither was it discouraged – was it not true that the Consuls were formed in the image of the God-Emperor himself?
The Proconsul and his Coadjutor were responsible for somewhere in the realm of four hundred billion Imperial citizens, as well as the security of the vital Boros Gate subsector itself.
Verenus spied several shapes approaching from the star fort, gleaming like falling stars, and snapped to attention. He could hear them now, jet engines screaming as they penetrated the atmosphere, the sound rising from a distant drone to an ear-splitting roar.
Three strike aircraft streaked out from the glare of the suns, flying in tight formation, wingtip to wingtip. Verenus recognised them as agile Lightning fighters by their forward sweeping aerofoils and distinctive wail. Slicing effortlessly through the air, they dived low and screamed over the heads of the Boros 232nd. Contrails of white vapour chased their progress like ribbons. Having shot overhead, the fighters peeled off sharply, turning in a wide sweeping motion. A blast of hot, displaced air struck the gathered soldiers of the 232nd a second later, sending their capes and banners fluttering.
As the scream of the Lightnings subsided, it was replaced with the resonant drone of bigger engines. A minute passed and a pair of Vulture gunships hove into view, their wings heavy with tubular rocket pods and autocannons. They were escorting a smaller Aquila lander. The Lightning strike fighters made another pass before pulling up and disappearing from sight.
The Aquila was resplendent gold, and Verenus was forced to squint against the glare reflected upon its gleaming metal skin. With vectored engines swivelled downwards, the lander and its gunship escort descended upon the gleaming white parade ground twenty metres in front of the Legatus and his officer cadre, landing gear unfolding beneath them.
They touched down smoothly, and even before their engines died, the golden-hulled Aquila was lowering its passenger compartment to the ground. ‘And behold, an Angel of Death walks among us,’ quoted the Legatus in a quiet voice. Verenus recognised the line from his years in the schola progenium, though he could not recall which scrivener had penned it.
All thoughts of ancient poets and their epics were forgotten as the blast door of the Aquila’s passenger compartment slid open with a hiss of equalising air- pressure.
A huge figure appeared in the doorway, so big that it was forced to duck to exit the landing craft. Only as it stepped onto the parade ground did it rise to its full height, and Verenus’s eyes widened.
The praefectus knew that the Consuls were big – he had seen countless holo- vids of their public appearances, and he had seen them commemorated in frescoes and sculptures his whole life – but nothing had prepared him for just how big. The warrior was a giant.
The Space Marine was encased in heavy plate armour as white and flawless as the marble of Sirenus Principal. He stood easily two heads taller than Verenus. His shoulders were immense, protected by huge pauldrons and the twin-headed eagle shone on his breastplate. He wore a royal blue tabard over his power armour, emblazoned with the eagle-head heraldry of the White Consuls Chapter. Its hems were stitched with delicate silver thread. Verenus recognised the Space Marine as Coadjutor Aquilius.
The Coadjutor’s head was bare. He had a broad face that was solid and youthful. Carrying his helmet under one arm, he strode towards the Legatus of the 232nd. Verenus fought the urge to step back.
‘And fear incarnate is his name,’ Verenus heard his Legatus murmur.
The Coadjutor halted a few steps before the regimental commander and his entourage. He stared at the Legatus, his expression inscrutable and his colourless eyes hard.
‘A quote from Sueton,’ said the Space Marine. His voice, Verenus noted, was deeper than a man’s. It seemed apt given his immensity. ‘In Nominae Glorifidae. Seventh act?’
‘Ninth,’ said the Legatus.
‘Of course,’ said the Coadjutor, bowing his head slightly in respect. A discussion on classical literature was the last thing that Verenus had expected.
At a barked order, the soldiers of the Boros 232nd saluted the Coadjutor with perfect synchronicity. The Space Marine returned the salute. Upon a second order the regiment snapped back to attention.
A robed adept of the Ministorum, the left half of his face hidden beneath a mass of augmetics, stepped to the White Consul’s side. A servo-skull hovering at his shoulder beeped indecipherable date-code.
‘Legatus Cato Merula, 232nd Regiment, Boros Prime Imperial Guard, rotated from battlefront Ixxus IX of the Thraxian campaign, under Lord Commander Tibult Horacio,’ intoned the adept from a half-bow, gesturing towards the regimental commander with one outstretched arm. His fingers were needle-like mechanical digits, and they buzzed with exloading data. ‘One month resupply, re-indoctrination and recruitment before return to frontline duties. Execution status XX.V.II.P.C.IX.’
The adept swung around to face the Coadjutor and abased himself, dropping to one knee and lowering his head towards the ground.
‘Lord Gaius Aquilius, 5th Company White Consuls of the Adeptus Praeses, Dux Militari, Coadjutor of Boros Prime,’ intoned the adept in his monotonous voice. ‘Praise be to the God-Emperor.’
‘Praise be,’ murmured the Legatus.
‘Praise be,’ said Coadjutor Aquilius.
‘It is an honour to address you, sons and daughters of Boros,’ said the Coadjutor, his resounding voice easily reaching the ears of every soldier of the 232nd without the need of vox enhancement.
‘The Proconsul was due to address you himself, but duties of state precluded him from being here,’ said Coadjutor Aquilius. ‘I pray my presence instead does not disappoint.’
Verenus knew that not one of the soldiers of the 232nd would have been even slightly disappointed. Only a few amongst them had ever laid eyes upon a Space Marine, and then only from afar.
‘I am humbled to be in the presence of such noble soldiers as yourselves,’ said the Coadjutor. ‘You have given all that I could have asked of you, and more, and I have faith that you shall continue to do so. I salute you, men and women of the illustrious 232nd.’
An adjutant of the Coadjutor stepped forward bearing an exquisite, ornate regimental standard. A golden aquila gleamed atop the standard pole above the ornate crosspiece of carved bone. The banner itself was tightly furled and affixed with studs. The adjutant dropped to one knee and offered the standard to the commander of the 232nd, who gestured for one of his younger officers, the regiment’s overawed aquilifer, to step forward and take the standard.
‘It was with great sadness and regret that I learnt of the loss of the 232nd’s standard during the Daxus Offensive on Thraxian Minor,’ said the Coadjutor. ‘I had my own personal artificers construct this replacement. May it serve your regiment faithfully.’
With a nod of encouragement from his Legatus, the regiment’s young aquilifer began to release the studs of the standard with shaking hands. With a flourish, he lifted it high in the air, allowing the banner to unfurl. A tapestry of such beauty was unveiled that it brought a gasp from the regiment. The glorious image of a winged saint, the martyred Ameliana – the regiment’s official patron – was emblazoned in gold and silver thread upon a field of blue. In the upper left corner was the unit’s regimental insignia, along with the four-dozen campaign badges of the regiment’s long history. The names of every Legatus that had led the regiment into battle since its founding – all three hundred and seventy-four of them – were picked out in silver thread on the back of the banner.
Verenus had not known exactly what to expect when meeting one of the revered Consuls face to face, but seeing such humility in one so far above the humble ranks of Guardsmen such as he was certainly not it.
The next few minutes passed in a blur as the Coadjutor was introduced by name to each of the 232nd’s officers. Suddenly the White Consul was standing before Verenus. Few men were the equal of Verenus’s height, but he felt like a child as he looked up into the broad face of the Space Marine.
The Coadjutor offered his hand, and Verenus clasped forearms with him. It was like gripping the arm of a statue. He could feel the terrifying strength in the Space Marine’s grip.
Finally, the Space Marine saluted the 232nd, and made his way back to his shuttle. Awestruck, Verenus watched the golden Aquila lander ascend towards the Kronos star fort, like an angel returning to the heavens.

This deck started as a take on the traditional MonoW Lifegain deck, but some tinkering and the printing of the GW Pathway allows this deck to play CoCo without any basic forests, which is huge given all the double white costed creatures in the deck. Instead of going tall with Ajani Pridemates or +1/+1 counters from Heliod, this deck goes wide with 4/4 angels. This deck can get some ridiculous board states. It laughs at most of the other and creature decks or burn, is favorable in the semi-mirror against other lifegain decks, and the addition of CoCo lets it survive against decks where instant speed is important (rogues, tempo, control). Combo & hard ramp are its biggest enemies, as it is often a turn too slow to close out the game (but Soul Warden + Angel of Vitality steals a lot of wins against goblins). More on the matchups later.
CoCo gets its own section. It's the entire reason this deck splashes green. Everyone knows how good CoCo is, and limiting our 4+ drops lets us use it to great effect. It does whiff either partially or fully sometimes, but it also potentially just wins us the game by grabbing Bishop + Resplendent Angel. The original version of this deck didn't run it, but I found that without it the deck just does too poorly against control/tempo to be competitive. CoCo, even with the risk, lets us fight a good fight against decks the mono-w version folds to.
Resplendent Angel - The star of the show, this card frequently leads to T3 scoops if the opponent isn't able to answer it at instant speed. The goal is to get this out on T3 or 4 and gain 5 life the same turn. We do this through a number of combinations in the Lifegain package below. This is an autoinclude four-of and the core creature of the deck.
Shalai, Voice of Plenty - Protects our other creatures, one of the long-haul backup plans, and one of our few 4 drops on curve. We can usually gain enough life to buy time while we build up a board, and then start pumping late game. Not super important to the game plan, but gives us something else to do with green mana besides CoCo. Hoses certain matchups like burn, discard, and sacrifice.
Legion Angel - Even as just a one-of fun-of 4-drop to potentially smooth out our curve, a 4 mana 4/3 Flier with Draw a Copy is really good. I know most people like the 2/2 split more, but I want to limit our 4+ drops because of CoCo. The 1/3 split is great in grindier matchups and you can always cut it to 1/2 or modify it to 2/2 after the board. If you want more sideboard space or want to make CoCo run smoother, I see no problem in cutting this.
Lyra Dawnbringer - Our only lord and another scoop-inducing card in certain creature matchups. Big enough to trigger Resplendent Angel on her own, pumps our 4/4s to 5/5s, and gains us a ton of life. Only 3 because legendary, there's an argument for her to be cut to make for better CoCo hits, but an incredibly powerful card in this deck.
Bishop of Wings - This card might secretly be the best enabler card in the deck, and I don't think the deck functions at all without it. A one drop plus this is our easiest path to gaining 5 life and the only way we can do it on turn 3 (usually, see Radiant Fountain below). The big butt on this guy blocks a lot of early threats, it gains us a ton of life once angels start coming down, and gives us the extra bit of reach after a board wipe to close out the game.
Soul Warden - Its the better half of soul sisters. Auto-include that can turn on Resplendent Angel during the opponent's turn.
Speaker of the Heavens - Our sacrificial lamb most of the time that can start pumping out angels once we get going. If we have bishop down and only need one more life to turn on Resplendent Angel, I've often found that trading it into a blocker is worth more than hoping you get the chance to activate it next turn.
Daxos - Our backup 2 drop that functions as a blocker and offers some alternative paths to 5 life, especially if we hit it with CoCo.
Angel of Vitality - When we don't have the nut draw, this card gives us another path to 5 life and is a critical card in certain matchups. Becomes a well-costed threat once we get going.
Radiant Fountain - One of the cards I'm unsure about. I originally included it as a way to sneak my way to 5 life on turn 3 but the math doesn't often doesn't line up. 3 one-drops + this is one of the only ways it speeds up the clock. However, it opens up some more avenues starting on turn 4, such as soul warden + angel of vitality + radiant fountain. Additionally, it turns on a T3 Resplendent Angel even if the opponent kills our 1-drop. Never run more than 2, we need too many white sources in the early game to function.
Now lets talk about the goals. There are 4 specific payoffs we want to accomplish in order of importance in the deck:
Gain 5 life in the turn Resplendent Angel comes down (and every turn after). Be at 25 life or more to turn Angel of Vitality into a 4/4 Be at 27 life or more to turn on Speaker of the Heavens Be at 35 life or more to win with Angel of Destiny (Sideboard Plan). Resplendent Angel is our most valuable payoff, so we want to setup the board to gain 5 life at a time. Our nut draw is T1 Soul Warden, T2 Bishop, T3 Resplendent Angel + Radiant Fountain. This puts 7 power in fliers on the battlefield, gains us 12 life, and also has some board wipe prevention built in. If we can't set it up on turn 3, Angel of Vitality opens up a lot of options for getting to 5 life the next turn.
This needs the most improvement and I'm constantly swapping things out. Here are some of the better options, most are self-explanatory and should be tuned for your meta.
Baffling End - Best source of 2-drop removal in the deck. GW doesn't have a lot of options here, especially without creatures already on the board, so this is our best answer to early mana dorks or must-kill threats. Hits Uro which is sweet.
Conclave Tribunal - Allegedly a good choice but I haven't had too much success with conclave tribunal. By the time we have enough bodies to tap, we want to be attacking with them.
Banishing Light - The other conclave Tribunal and the one in the deck. I find the consistency of this better than the potentially cheaper casting of Conclave tribunal. I know I'm probably wrong, but that's just how my games have gone.
Skyclave Apparition - I realized while writing this that this needs to be in the main deck, probably 3 of them.
Always in flux and a lot of this is still a holdover before I added CoCo to the deck. Knight of Autumn is the best card in here since CoCo hits it (and its another reason we play green!). Angel of Destiny is brought in for the lifegain mirror to try and win without damage. Dawn of Hope gives us something at instant speed to do against control/tempo. Everything else is self-explanatory.
I'd like more creatures in here and would love to hear suggestions! Ooze is something I've considered over RiP.
Aggro/Burn - This deck performs very well against most aggro decks thanks to big booty blockers and a lot of lifegain. Who cares about getting hit for 12 by embercleave when I'm gaining 10 a turn? Keep Shalai against burn, cut against aggro and bring in Settle. Done.
Control - Before adding CoCo, this matchup was terrible. It's still rough, but now we can try and sneak in CoCo or force counters and Bishop makes sure we aren't completely ruined by a board wipe. Board in Dawn of Hope to have something to do with mana and try to keep up with their card advantage. The main goal is to get them low enough that a CoCo potentially ends it.
Tempo - Rogues is a scary matchup but usually fair. CoCo again comes in to save the day. The enchantment/artifact tempo decks I've run into are usually Blue/White, so we can wind up chump blocking for days. See my above screen shot for an example of how this matchup can get. Knight of Autumn is great here.
Combo - Goblins is the most significant matchup I'd put here, and our only saving grace is Soul Warden + Angel of Vitality. If they try to go wide, we can often gain just enough life to survive their initial turn, chump block Muxus, and swing in with 4/4 fliers to win. Other combo decks are rough, because we lack the instant speed interaction to stop them from going off.
Ramp - We actually do fairly well against Bant Ramp or similar Uro style decks, but we get absolutely crushed by Forsaken Monument. We just don't have the speed to get through their incremental life gain before Ugin comes down.
So yeah, the deck feels really good on the ladder for the most part. CoCo makes even our bad matches winnable and colorless Forsaken Monument is the only thing that really hoses us. I'm sure this isn't the final best iteration of the deck, but I definitely feel splashing green really helps this deck. I'm a big fan of some of the classic tribes, and it's nice to see Angels actually proving to be a viable threat.
