A Guide to getting your own Anime streaming service
· A decent Internet connection
To do this, I used the following softwares:
· Jackett (Optional)
· Plex (Optional)
· RClone, WinFSP, NSSM (Optional)
Part 1: Setting up QBittorent
· Download the latest version of QBittorent from https://www.qbittorrent.org/download.php
· Install QBittorent
· Open settings, go to Behavior and tick “Start QBittorent on Windows start up”
· Go to Connection and disable “Use different port on each startup”
· Next, go to Downloads,
(1) Set “Default Torrent Management” mode to Automatic
(2) Set “When Torrent Category changed” to Relocate Torrent
(3) Set “Default Save Path changed” to Relocate affected torrents
(4) Set “Category Save Path changed” to Relocate affected torrents
(5) Enable “Create subfolder for torrents with multiple files”
(6) Set a fixed path to “Keep incomplete torrents in”
· Next, go to Web UI,
(1) Enable “Web User Interface”
(2) Make sure the IP address field is “*”
(3) Make note of the Port. Should be 8080 by default
(4) Set up a Username and Password under Authentication.
· Next, go to BitTorrent and set up seeding limits the way you want. Make sure to keep the seeding ratio and seeding time as high as you can since it helps other people download. Optional: Set Maximum active downloads to 1 (Helps if you want to run post processing scripts on your episodes)
· Apply these settings and create a new Category using the side pane. Make note of the name you use for the category. Also, set a fixed save path for the Category.
Part 2: Setting up Sonarr
· Download the latest version of Sonarr from https://sonarr.tv/#download. Optional: Use the Sonarr 3.0 beta
· Make sure to enable “Install Windows Service” while installing it
· After the installation completes, a browser window should open and take you to the first-time setup.
· Open Settings, go to the General tab and
(1) Enable Advanced Settings
(2) Make note of the Port Number and change it if you want. From now on, to open Sonarr easily, go to your browser and type localhost:[The Port Number]
(3) Optional: Set up Security
(4) Under updates, set the Branch to develop
· Go to “Download Clients”
(1) Click on the plus sign
(2) Click on QBittorent
(3) Give it a name
(4) Make sure the host is “localhost”
(5) Make sure the port is the port you got in the QBittorent Web UI section. It should be 8080 by default if you didn’t change it.
(6) Set the Username and Password to the ones you set in QBittorent
(7) Set the Category to the new category’s name you created in QBittorent
(8) Click on test to verify the settings
(9) Then click on the drop down button on the blue save button and click “Save and Add”
(10) Enable all settings under “Completed Download Handling” and “Failed Download Handling”
· Go to Indexers, click the plus sign and add Nyaa. Name it, mess with the settings according to your preferences. I recommend that you just set a number of Minimum seeders to at least 10 and don’t mess with the other settings if you don’t know what you’re doing. Then “Save and Add”. It’s always better to have more than 1 indexer, so we’ll be setting that up with Jackett later. If you are okay with just having Nyaa as an indexer, you can skip that later part.
· This is a basic Sonarr set up. You can mess around with other settings on your own and they are pretty use to get the hang of. You can set sizes for various qualities in Quality, set up profiles to your liking, set up Media management etc. You can add series from the home page. While adding a new series, you can set a path to where you want to store all your anime. Make sure to set the series type to Anime. You can use the premade profiles or use a profile you made yourself. I personally use the “HD - 720p/1080p” profile. Setting profiles helps Sonarr filter the quality you want.
We are done with the basic set up. If you’ve set this much up, you should be able to automatically download episodes from Nyaa. The automatic downloading works on episodes yet to air. To download the previous episodes, you can click on the show and click on the search button to search for them. The further parts are optional.
Part 3: Setting up Jackett (Helps you use other torrent trackers like Animetosho, Anirena, Anidex etc.)
· Download Jackett for Windows from https://github.com/Jackett/Jackett/releases
· Make sure to enable “Install Windows service” while installing
· Open the Jackett Web UI using the taskbar tray icon
· Click on Add indexer and add Anime indexer sites. I personally use Animetosho and Anirena along with Nyaa (which you’ve already set up)
· Follow the steps given by Jackett to add the indexers to Sonarr. While adding the indexer, make sure to set Categories to 5070.
Now with this part complete the next parts are highly optional
Part 4: Set up Plex (This will help you organize your Anime in a streaming service style)
· Download Plex media server from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/
· Install it and set it to automatically launch on Windows start
· Setting up Plex is fairly easy. I won’t be going into detail for setting it up. Essentially, you just need to have your anime organized in a folder, add a new Library and add your Anime folder to it. Then Plex should periodically scan that folder for anime. It can recognize about 95% of the Anime on its own. Just make sure that your Anime is arranged well. For example, folder named “Demon Slayer”, season folders like Season 1, Season 2 etc. and having episodes have a fixed naming scheme like “Demon Slayer - S01E01 - ___”. You can set Sonarr to automatically do this for you. For your already downloaded Anime, you can use a tool like Filebot to rename the episodes to the TVDB database. Although Filebot is paid, you can find a free version (Essentially a pirated fork). If you can pay for it please pay, since it is a good piece of software. You can get the free version here - https://github.com/barry-allen07/FB-Mod
· To stream from your PC’s Plex, you can use the Plex mobile app which won’t consume any data if your phone and PC are on the same Network. To use the legal version, you’ll need to pay atleast $5 for usability but it’s fairly easy to find a cracked apk if you are on Android.
Look for the cracked version in Telegram channel named ModdedCentral.
We’re essentially done with the set up. The next part would allow to store the Anime online. This would be good for people who have an excellent Internet connection and limited local storage.
Part 5: Setting up RClone
· Make yourself a new anonymous Google account. Don’t use any of your personal info.
· Go to td.fastio.me
· Enter a drive name, the email address you just created and in the dropdown list, select City College of San Francisco, solve the captcha and click on get. Ideally, this should add a shared drive to that Google account’s Google Drive. The storage is essentially unlimited but I can’t assure the longevity of that drive.
· The next part is taken from directly from a brilliant post by – u/pierce3215
Setting up Rclone
- Download Rclone 64 Bit for Windows (Currently 1.47.0)
b. Unzip the folder to C:\rclone
- Open PowerShell (Admin)
b. Type n for New Remote
c. Type gdrive (You can use any other name here if you want)
d. Type 13 for Google Drive (Not Google Cloud Storage)
e. Now it is time to make your own client id
i. Goto https://console.developers.google.com/ (It’s ideal to use the google account you created earlier)
ii. Create a New Project
iii. Under “ENABLE APIS AND SERVICES” search for “Drive”,
and enable the “Google Drive API”
iv. Click “Credentials” in the left-side panel (not “Create
credentials”, which opens the wizard), then “Create
credentials”, then “OAuth client ID”. It will prompt you
to set the OAuth consent screen product name, if you
haven’t set one already.
v. Choose an application type of “Desktop App”, and click
“Create” (I simply named mine oAuth 2.0 Client ID)
vi. This will then show you a client ID and client secret.
vii. Copy the Client ID
f. Go back to PowerShell and right click to paste the Client ID
g. Now go back to the Google developers console and copy the Client Secret
h. Go back to PowerShell and right click to paste the Client Secret
i. You will now be prompted to choose a number from
below for the scope – type 1 and then enter
ii. You will now be prompted to either enter a string value for the root folder. Leave it blank.
iii. You will now be prompted to either enter a string value for the service_account_file - Leave this blank and press enter
iv. Next you will be asked if you’d like to edit the advanced config (y/n) - Type n and then enter
v. Now you’ll be asked if you’d like to use auto config -
Type y and then enter
i. You will now be taken to the sign-on page for google drive – if not, enter the following in your web browser [http://127.0.0.1:53682/auth]
Use the Google account you created earlier as only it is linked to the team drive
i. Enter your login details
j. Go back to PowerShell and when asked if you would like to configure this as a team drive in PowerShell, type y and then select the Team drive you created earlier
k. Your finalized version of the config file will now be output in PowerShell and all you have to do is enter y to accept it
l. The rclone config file has now been built and will be located
Setting up Rclone Mount
- Download WinFsp and select all of the options during installation https://github.com/billziss-gh/winfsp/releases/download/v1.7/winfsp-1.7.20172.msi
- Download the nssm tool https://nssm.cc/ci/nssm-2.24-101-g897c7ad.zip
- Open PowerShell, but not as an Admin
then change directories within PowerShell to the rclone
folder that is holding the nssm.exe file (cd c:\rclone)
b. Type the following under Applications:
i. Path: C:\rclone\rclone.exe
ii. Startup Directory: C:\rclone
iii. Arguments: mount --allow-other --dir-cache-time 72h --drive-chunk-size 64M --log-level INFO --vfs-read-chunk-size 32M --vfs-read-chunk-size-limit off gdrive: X: --config "C:\Users\username\.config\rclone\rclone.conf" --vfs-cache-mode writes
Note: Here make sure to edit the username in rclone config path, and where it’s written “gdrive: X:” change gdrive to the name of the remote you created using rclone. You won’t need to change it if you named your remote gdrive. X: signifies the drive letter your remote would have in windows explorer. You can change it if you have another drive with the letter X:
iv. Service Name: RcloneMount
- Under Exit actions, in the Delay Restart by box, enter 10000.
- You should now see a new drive under your

uTP Speed Tests of Various Torrent Clients with Kali Linux ISO and Trackers Only
The author did loopback tests which are wonderful for limiting variables. Yet, given the transmission limits of TCP and different uTP throttling algorithms client's use, real world tests have great usefulness as well. Real world tests are a hairier beast with dozens of additional complex variables of which some are user adjustable and many not. I thought I'd attempt to optimally configure a few and see how they fare. Kali Linux rolled a new ISO Tuesday, so that seemed like a good day to start testing the clients. My understanding is rTorrent (Linux only) is best. I don't have a PC to dedicate for Linux at the moment, and am a Linux noob anyways, so I just tested Windows clients.
Tests setup details and extra technical jargon is at the bottom of this post.
4.5 HOURS SEED TEST
|GB Seeded||Average CPU %||Memory Working Set|
|Deluge (w/o ltconfig plugin)||1.2||1.2||55 MB|
Glancing at the number of connected peers when I removed the torrents, it was BiglyBT 24 vs QBT 6 vs Deluge 3. I'm perplexed Deluge had such a poor showing given I'd configured it the same as the others (see config at the bottom). It was tested without the ltconfig plugin which I hope will make a difference? That plugin is at least necessary to disable TCP whereas disabling TCP was exposed in the other clients without need of a plugin. I'll checkout ltconfig later.
* In my particular setup I don't mind using more resources for greater performance. If the resource usage is huge when loading up a large volume of torrents, apparently it's tweakable anyways per here:
The 2015 comparison tested Taxiti. The author indicated it was limited by being single threaded. It seems that may no longer be the case, so I gave it a shot against QBT & BiglyBT overnight.
11 HOURS SEED TEST
|GB Seeded||Average CPU %||Memory Working Set|
Glancing at the number of connected peers when I stopped the seeds, it was Bigly 51 vs QBT 5 vs Tixati 8.
Neat how well Tixati performed given it's resource usage. Poking around in Tixati I saw a "upload maximization" setting that force unchokes all peers so I thought I'd START OVER again while away until the next day.
16 HOURS SEED TEST
|GB Seeded||Average CPU %||Memory Working Set|
Glancing at the number of connected peers when I removed the torrents, it was Tixati 6 vs uTorrent 7 vs BiglyBT 15. I'm impressed with uTorrents showing given the low CPU and memory overhead. Anyone have any ideas why Tixati would have a worse showing with that enabled?
Test PC: 3.2ghz Xeon quad (no hyperthreading) with 32GB of RAM. To do the tests I disconnected other clients from my router and just left the test PC on my gig LAN. I setup a RAM drive to rule out any disk bottleneck. Ports were forwarded in my router and Windows firewall exceptions made for the clients to be connectable. I opted to do uTP tests since my observation has been the overwhelming majority of fast leechers of my seeds have been uTP. I gather that's because instead of connecting to nearby CDNs serving website traffic, peer to peer has the challenge of transmitting to peers on all continents which is more challenging with TCP than uTP (UDP based).
I'm in the US. Here's some rough examples:
|Latency||# of Hops|
|Hong Kong||201 ms||15|
When you calculate max TCP throughput limited by latency and packet loss it seems reasonable that 930mbps of potential turns into 100mbps in order to reach a peer in London for example. Calculator here: https://www.wintelguy.com/wanperf.pl
I know a lot of folks use VPNs which add extra hops...let's say 50ms minimum. That would cut the preceding London example down further to 70mbps.
I already had the Kali Linux ISO torrent downloaded. Then, to test each client I loaded the torrent file into each client in a stopped state, ran the hash check to make it seedable and started seeding from all three clients within a few seconds of each other.
|uTP Only||Max Connections/Second||Max Connections Overall||Max Connections Per Torrent||Max Upload Slots Per Torrent||PeX Enabled?|
|Deluge 1.3.15 w/o ltconfig plugin||No option to disable TCP w/o ltconfig plugin||500||unlimited||unlimited||unlimited||N|
|QBT 4.1.6||Y||20? *||unlimited||unlimited||unlimited||N|
As for the rest of the "max" settings. They're just that...maximums the clients will get nowhere near unless your seeding a blockbuster torrent that just released or a huge volume of torrents.
Average CPU and Memory Working Set was just me glancing at the client process in Windows inbuilt resource monitor.
I'm just learning more about torrenting since lucking out with fiber internet at my home. Some of the wisest folks I've come across:
▬ The author of the 2015 comparison, Switeck on the qBittorent forum https://qbforums.shiki.hu/index.php?action=profile;u=165618
▬ The folks working on LibTorrent here https://github.com/arvidn/libtorrent/issues/3542
▬ parg that works on BiglyBT https://github.com/parg
My tests were brief and anything but authoritative. E.G. maybe by coincidence of timing a particular client picked up a whale of a leecher the others didn't. A friend suggested I test with PeX disabled on premise that millions of folks use something called private trackers that don't use PeX. For all I know, enabling PeX for each client shuffles these test results entirely...or maybe it would amplify the gigabytes upload of each client relatively equally. Hopefully someone here has some insight into how that would shake out??
It would be amazing if some of the folks passionate about p2p sharing via torrents could publish something more robust like a week or month's worth of data or tests that include rTorrent.
Happy torrenting all!
EDIT 5/28: Learning about uTP (UDP) and doing these tests definitely convinced me of it's merit. However, by design the tests had nothing to do with resource usage when seeding hundreds of torrents. I have hundreds of book and music torrents I've sourced from from LibreVox and Now.BT.co and loading them into BiglyBT presented lots of challenges.
I'd Bigly set to add torrents without confirmation dialogue and add in stopped state. Dragging as few as four torrents into the Bigly GUI would cause not just the Bigly GUI to hang but even diminish Windows responsiveness. They'd load successfully though. Dragging 20 torrents into Bigly's GUI would cause Bigly to hang in such a way it could not recover. Windows resource monitor didn't reflect notable CPU/MEM/DISK use for the Bigly process. Terminating it's process and relaunching, the torrents were successfully loaded up though.
I changed it's minimum Java memory heap to 1GB min and max 4GB. No improvement. Then instead of drag and drop I set Bigly to auto add torrents from a specific directory instead. Same hang behavior. Wheather 20 torrents or 200 Bigly would hang and if the process terminated just a minute later and relaunched all the torrents would be loaded as desired. Once all the torrents were loaded and seeding (not queued) I checked out the resource use and despite zero active peer connections the BiglyBT process was using 20% CPU. Hopefully all of this was caused by a mistake I made somehow.
I was in a hurry so I loaded up the torrents in qBittorrent instead. I observed the qBittorrent GUI hang for 10-20 seconds and it didn't affect the rest of Windows. Also, with all the torrents seeding and zero peers qBittorrent's CPU use is 0.05%. That's not a typo. Hopefully the Bigly behaviors I observed were a fluke or troubles of my own making. My intent is to setup Linux and rTorrent in the coming months anyways, but I just thought I'd give mates a heads up if others have seen similar behavior from BiglyBT.
