(I know not Gta specific but still feel like it would belong work) I made a 13-page research paper disproving video games cause violence for us gamers it includes citations and all feel free to use this in your personal life if you need to prove people wrong or anything like that

Research Question:
Do video games cause violence?
Review of Literature:
For my research topic, I decided to choose the topic “Do video games cause violence?” I chose it because it is a personal fascination and because of the El Paso shooting happening and people blaming video games for it. So I think it’s time to answer the question that has been around since 1976. The answer may surprise you.
According to ProCon.org, CBS News, and The New York Times, the debate about whether video games cause violence started in 1976 after a game called “Death Race'' was released. This game caused hysteria in the United States because the objective was to run over gremlins, but these gremlins were very reminiscent of humans. Another reason was that the original working title to the game was supposedly “Pedestrian.”
The next big controversy was in 1993 after the hit game ''Mortal Combat '' was released. The controversy was about the “realistic” violence and how it was impacting young people. After this, Sega released a non-gore version. This also helped lead to the founding of the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) by the Entertainment Software Association. It was founded to rate video games based on whether they had qualities such as strong language, violence, sexual content, drugs, etc.
Probably the biggest controversy involving video games was after the Columbine school shooting. The shooters played the violent games “Doom” and “Wolfenstein 3D,” both made by id and published by Bethesda Studio. Many in the media used this fact to blame video games for
real-life violence. Other people also blamed video games for this atrocity. Several of the victims' families sued twenty-five entertainment companies.
One of the last controversies is about the hit game, “Grand Theft Auto”(“GTA”). The reason that this game is controversial is quite apparent with the amount of violence, guns, drugs, money, vehicles, and sex appeal in the game. Because of this, it has riled up many people and media outlets. It has also made Rockstar Games a fortune, with GTA V being the highest-grossing form of entertainment ever. But, the success of this game has caused it to be a media target. It has been blamed for children becoming more violent, mass shootings, etc. In 2005, after Hillary Clinton found out that you could access sexual content in “GTA San Andreas”, she introduced a bill to outlaw the selling of mature-rated games to minors. The bill did not pass the committee.
The latest controversy is the allegation that video games caused the recent El Paso shooting. President Trump said this about the situation: "We must stop the glorification of violence in our society. This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace. It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. We must stop or substantially reduce this and it has to begin immediately...". However, there is no evidence to support these claims.
The question of whether video games are to blame for violence in society has been going on for almost half a century. So it's time to answer the age-old question, “Do video games cause violence?”
According to The New York Times and Vox, there has been zero evidence of a correlation between video games and real-life violence. In fact, according to Procon.org, after
the release of video games, delinquent crime went down instead of up. The author also said that it can provide a “safe outlet for aggressive and angry feelings, and may reduce crime.”
According to CNN, there have been many studies disproving that video games cause violence. One study was done by Andrew K. Przybylski, Edward L. Deci, C. Scott Rigby, and Richard M. Ryan. They performed a test by making two versions of Tetris - one had simpler controls versus one having harder controls. They hypothesized that the harder control group was going to get more frustrated and be more aggressive, which it did. The author points out how anything that is challenging will make a person more aggressive. That is what happened. However, the effect was minor, not a large enough effect that would lead a person to commit crimes and shootings.
Przybylski also addressed earlier studies that appeared to find the correlation between video games and violence. Przybylski found that these studies were done very poorly, and their conclusions could not be trusted. For instance, the study noted that the majority of players of violent video games are men. On average, men are found to be more aggressive than women. So, findings relating videogame players and violence can be explained by men being, on average, more violent than women, not that video games caused players to be more violent.
The CNN article agreed with Procon.org about how video games can give children a place to let their anger out without harming anyone. They spoke to Christopher Ferguson, an associate professor and co-chairman of the Department of Psychology at Stetson University. Dr. Ferguson said, “Basically, by keeping young males busy with things they like" -- whether it's playing sports, collecting stamps or playing first-person shooter video games -- "you keep them off the streets and out of trouble." So, overall, these findings suggest video games probably reduce violence instead of increasing it.
According to CBS and Vox, there is an even bigger problem with blaming video games for violence than it just being wrong. It stops us, as a society, from finding and helping with the real problems that cause these horrible catastrophes. Some of the actual contributors to violence are drug abuse, abusive parents, bad social environment, mental illness, etc. All of these contributing factors get crowded out by talk about video games. This can be seen in the El Paso shooting, where a bad social environment did contribute to the shooting. According to CBS, the shooter was frequently on the site 8 Chan, where the shooter posted his manifesto. This site is infamous for having white supremacists and other hateful messages, and is thought to have helped the shooter become more radical and incited him to violence.
Another reason to conclude that video games don’t cause violence like we saw in El Paso is that similar incidents do not happen in other countries where lots of people play video games. So, why might these things happen in our country and not these other countries? One reason might be the law itself. According to The New York Times, Japan and South Korea have among the lowest violent crime rates in the world even though they are among the highest gaming countries in the world. A primary reason for this could be that they have stricter gun laws than the United States. In the U.S, we have the second amendment to the constitution which allows us to buy guns. But, in Japan, the only guns that you may have are air rifles and shotguns. To even get these, you need to have heavy training. In South Korea, you can only get a hunting license and a sporting license, and even with the licenses, you must store your guns in a police station. So, if someone is concerned about mass shootings, instead of debating video games, these countries suggest there are better ways to stop these shootings. We could ban certain guns, more gun control laws, higher requirements to own a gun, restrictions based on mental health, etc. The problem with these options is that as of right now, Congress and
President Trump shows no indication of passing any laws that would affect guns. Instead, President Trump said he thinks the problem is not the guns themselves, but video games.
In fact, President Trump funded a study to find a link between violent media, including video games, and real violence, and the study found none. Former President Obama did the exact same study and also found no correlation.
Often people will cite violent video games as a cause of actual violence when it can be shown to have played no role. When there was a mass shooting at Virginia Tech, high profile people such as Dr. Phil and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney cited video games as the cause. However, later news came out that the shooter did not in fact play video games.
Recent studies show that the reason people may talk about video games when violence or shootings occur is to avoid talking about other problems, or they just want something to scapegoat instead. Studies have shown that when the perpetrator of these despicable crimes is a caucasian male, video games will be eight times more likely to be mentioned than when the perpetrator is a person of color. This places blame on the video games and not the person when the person is white. When a person of color commits a crime, the blame is put on the individual. This is another form of racial profiling which is not right and is harmful to our society.
Literature Analysis:
In my research, I reviewed six topics about my subject. They are as follows: (1) how blaming video games could be used for racial profiling; (2) how fraudulent studies are to blame for the fallacy that video games cause violence; (3) new and correctly conducted studies show the contrary to old studies that said the video games caused violence; (4) one huge contributor
to violence is lack of gun control; (5) the history of video games violent controversies; and (6) that video games can be used for good.
My sources concur with the conclusion that video games are not to blame for the violence that individuals or multiple individuals carried out. In fact, the evidence seems to be that video games are not in fact bad but are actually good because they can let people take their aggression out without actually hurting anyone.
Original research
For my original research, I interviewed Dr. Daniel Shafer of Baylor University. Dr. Shafer has studied whether there is a link between video games and violence. I asked Dr. Shafer:
  1. Does violent/exciting media make people angrier? Do you think that this would make people commit extreme acts of violence?
There is some evidence that consuming violent media sometimes causes increased arousal in human beings. This arousal can manifest as hostility if exposure to violence is followed by some negatively-charged stimulus, such as an argument or scolding by parents or something offensive a sibling does. This can be explained by Dolf Zillmann’s Excitation Transfer theory. I did a study a few years ago about playing video games against other people, and feelings of hostility afterward. It turns out that competitive video games caused increased hostility in my participants. The most interesting thing was that the most hostility was not felt by violent game players (Halo). The most post-play hostility was felt by Tetris players. I’ll attach the study for you to look at.
No, I do not think that watching violent media CAUSES people to commit violent acts of any kind. There are many other factors to consider.
  1. What are the effects, if any, of violent media on the mind?
For SOME people, there MAY be an increased risk factor for anxiety, stress, and hostile thoughts and feelings after exposure to violent media.
The likelihood of this increases when other factors are present, such as learning disabilities, developmental disorders like Autism, and negative life circumstances like real-life violence in the home.
  1. Do you think that there is a way for video games to be used in a positive way besides just playing them for fun?
Absolutely. Video games can and do teach positive skills if they are used correctly. One example is Minecraft Education Edition which is often used in schools to teach various skills. My kids play math video games which make learning math somewhat fun. Video games can also just be used as a healthy escape from the stress of life, a way to connect with friends in multiplayer games, and an opportunity to learn teamwork and problem solving with others. The key is balance. You can definitely spend too much time playing video games, and that can be bad when it interferes with other things you really need to be doing, like homework, chores around the house, going to church, playing sports, etc.
  1. Why do you think that video games have been blamed for so many tragedies such as school shootings?
Video games are an easy scapegoat, and blaming them allows society to feel better about how we treat people. I think that when video games are brought up as a cause for tragedies like Columbine or Newtown, other very important factors such as the perpetrator’s home lives their potential mental condition get minimized, which is a problem.
  1. Is there a correlation between video games and violence in your opinion?
Sure, correlations have been found. But it’s very important to realize that correlation does not mean causation. Many people play video games, especially young men. So when young men commit violence, is it really surprising that they also play violent video games? It shouldn’t be. Most young men play violent video games. But most young men don’t commit violent crime. So we have to ask what else is going on in their lives that might explain their acts?
  1. What age demographic would find the strongest correlation between video games and violence?
I think the younger a child is, the more careful parents should be about what kinds of content they allow. Younger children have trouble distinguishing between fiction and reality. That ability develops over time. It’s really up to parents to determine what content is appropriate for their children. I think any behavioral problems due to media exposure would be more likely to develop when children are exposed to media they aren’t emotionally or cognitively ready to handle. As such, it isn’t the media causing behavioral problems, per se, but a lack of adequate parental involvement and supervision. But remember, that’s only IF behavioral problems develop, which is rare.
  1. Does limiting video games or violent media prevent risky behavior?
I think it can for some children, but again, it’s up to parents to know their kids and be involved in their media lives. I think that when parents are involved in selection of media content and are controlling exposure time, behavioral problems can be limited.
Analysis of original research:
In the answers he gave to my questions, Dr. Shafer stated that he has found that video games do not cause violence. A bigger cause is the effects of bad parenting. Dr. Shafer did say that video games might have an effect on the brain if the child is very young and is not able to distinguish reality from fiction. The effects of would be strengthened if the child has learning disabilities or developmental disorders like Autism. However Dr. Shafer said that, at the end of the day, it's inadequate parenting that leads to this. Parents are the ones who should know when their child is ready and can handle violent or mature content. He also mentions that correlation is not causation. A lot of young men play violent games. Some go out and are violent, but these are not a lot of young men in comparison to how many who play these games.
There is very little evidence that video games cause violence. Most studies that show a link between video games and violence are old and have been criticized as not being scientifically accurate. The majority of studies show no link between video games and violence. The studies that have shown any link find that the violence that may be linked to video games is mild. I believe this shows that video games have been scapegoated for a long time even though it should not have been, especially because the new evidence disproving these false
statements. We need to stop people like President Trump from scapegoating games and instead focusing on the actual problems that are causes of violence, such as mental health, gun control, helping people with mental disorders, etc.
