Security forces detained a manager of a prominent rights group in Cairo on Saturday night after he met with European diplomats, which the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) described as an "unprecedented escalation".
According to the EIPR, security forces arrested its administrative manager, Mohamed Basheer, after midnight, and held him for 12 hours until he appeared at the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo's Fifth Settlement district.
Along with being questioned regarding the organisation’s latest publications and legal aid work, the EIPR said that the prosecution’s investigations into Basheer were focused on a meeting held on 3 November with a number of foreign ambassadors and diplomats, with whom he discussed human rights in Egypt and around the world.
According to the Swiss embassy in Cairo, 14 European diplomats visited the EIPR in November for a meeting on the status of civil society in the country. The EIPR denounced Basheer's detention as "the latest episode in the ongoing crackdown that aims to intimidate and scare legal and human rights professionals as well as social and political activists".
“This cannot be seen outside of the general authoritarian and repressive context, which is dealing one blow after another to the most basic of rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Egyptian constitution and international norms and agreements,” it said.
Basheer was charged with: “Joining a terrorist organisation with knowledge of its purposes"; "using a personal account on the internet to spread false information that undermines public security"; "committing one of the crimes of funding terrorism"; and "broadcasting false news and statements that undermines public security and harming national interest”, the statement added. No evidence was cited by the prosecution to support the charges. It decided to hold Basheer for 15 days pending investigations into the charges in case no 855/2020, where several other human rights advocates are being tried, including lawyers Mohammed el-Baqer and Mahinour el-Masry. The interior ministry has yet to comment on Basheer’s arrest, which comes days after the government’s release of hundreds of political prisoners held in pre-trial detention since last year on similar charges.
Egyptian authorities are accused of detaining more than 60,000 political prisoners since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ousted his democratically elected predecessor Mohamed Morsi in a 2013 military coup. Many of those detained include government critics and civil society workers, who have been increasingly targeted since a controversial NGO law was ratified by Sisi in 2017. The law was criticised by civil society activists as “the worst in history”.
Sisi has denied holding political prisoners in the country, while Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said last week at a press conference alongside his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian that "there is no arbitrary detention, there is only detention according to the law" in Egypt. Last month, over 200 European lawmakers sent a letter to Sisi, publicly denouncing his government’s continued human rights abuses as a threat to the country's security and stability.
The letter urged Sisi to release human rights defenders who are held in pre-trial detention, particularly with the health risks associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nugu Roundup #62 - Like Swan Swan Swan - 201025 + Album Giveaway!
What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we felt the Purple Rain. This week I'm going to do something a bit different and combine the 'In Memoriam' section with my top group feature as there's an exciting new group which is in many ways a continuation of another long-running one, let's get to know Black Swan (and do a deep dive into the history of Rania)!
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the sixteenth Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs!
What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show...
Who are they?: Black Swan is a new 5 member multi-ethnic girl group under DR Music, and is the reboot of long-running group Rania. Somewhat unfortunately they also sometimes use the acronym 'B.S.'. The company says the name means the group will "show a unique and differentiated charm from the swans that are prevalent in the music industry".
Company: DR Music is currently the home of Black Swan and co-ed martial-arts/idol crossover group K-Tigers Zero. Previously they were known for Rania and for first-gen mega-group Baby V.O.X.
- Position: Leader, Lead Vocalist, Lead Dancer
- Real Name: Go Young Heun
- Age: 25 (IA)
- Facts: She is a former member of Stellar, however she joined the group shortly before it would eventually disband and did not take part in any comebacks with them. She says that The Entertainment Pascal tried to hold her to her contract after the group dissolved but she was able to come to an understanding with them. She is still friends with Soyoung (previously of Stellar) as the two had the bond of joining the group late. She is also friends with Eunji of Brave Girls. She had previously auditioned for Key East Entertainment. She joined DR Music to be a part of Rania and performed with the group in live concerts after Rania's last comeback and stayed through the reboot.
- Position: Main Rapper, Lead Dancer
- Real Name: Fatou Samba
- Age: 25 (IA)
- Facts: She is from Dakar, Senegal but later emigrated to Belgium and was raised there. She is the first Kpop Idol of pure African descent. She can speak English, French, German, Dutch, and Korean. She worked as a model before joining Rania and staying through the reboot to Black Swan. She says she dreamed about becoming a Kpop idol since she was 15. She is a big fan of Girls' Generation.
- Position: Main Dancer, Vocalist
- Real Name: Kim Da Hye
- Age: 25 (IA)
- Facts: She joined the group for the Black Swan reboot. She is a former dancer for 1Million Dance Studios. Her stage name comes from Judy Hobbs, a rabbit-character from the animated movie Zootopia.
- Position: Main Vocalist, Dancer
- Real Name: Kim Hye Mi
- Age: 24 (IA)
- Facts: She is the member with the most experience in Rania, having joined in 2014 and making her first comeback with the group with Demonstrate (and is the only member to have worked with some of the original Rania members). She competed in Miss Trot. She was part of the Rania HEX sub-unit with Alex. She would often cover original-Rania member Di's parts after Di left the group, but could also handle Jooyi's parts (who is now known as Cosmic Girl) because they have a similar vocal tone. She has modeled for Maxim Korea.
- Position: Lead Rapper, Vocalist, Maknae
- Real Name: Larissa Cartes (Brazilian name) Ayumi Sakata (Japanese name)
- Age: 19 (IA)
- Facts: She had joined prior to the reboot under the name Larissa but changed her stage name to Leia for Black Swan (possibly to avoid confusion with Black Pink's Lisa who's given name Lalisa is spelled the same as Larissa in Hangul). Her father is Japanese and her mother is Brazilian, and she holds dual Brazilian/Japanese citizenship. She is from Curitaba, Brazil, a city known for having a large portion of European descendants from Portuguese, Italian, and German immigration. She is the first Brazilian female Kpop idol. She can speak English (learning), Portuguese, Spanish, and Korean. She is roomates with Fatou.
- Song: Originally a song meant for Rania but never released, this is a straightforward dance-pop song with impressive sexy choreography and the first appearance of tighty-whities in girl group wardrobe that I can recall.
- Composes/Producers: Melanie Fontana (CLC - Helicopter, IOI - Whatta Man, Secret Number - Who Dis?), Michael "Lindgren" Schultz (Hyorin - Say My Name, TXT - Run Away, BTS - On), Shark (Busters - Paeonia, Shark - 2Lips), A.Wright (Busters - Pinky Promise, South Club - Rock Star, JxR -Element)
Who were they?: Rania origins were, somewhat fittingly, as a planned third generation of 1st-gen mega-group Baby V.O.X (following the original and the Baby V.O.X reboot Baby V.O.X ReV). However DR Music eventually decided to create a new group instead of carrying on the Baby V.OX name. Short for "Regeneration Idol in Asia", Rania was planned as a groundbreaking multi-ethnic girl group from the beginning with Korean, Thai, and a Chinese member (along with a Korean member fluent in Japanese using a Japanese stage name who the company initially promoted as being Japanese) as an 8 member group.
Debut as Rania: April 6th, 2011 with Dr. Feel Good (MV) Live Stage (Link) English Version (MV)
- Song: The lead single from their first digital single album "Teddy Riley, the First Expansion in Asia" this song was originally written for Lady Gaga. A dark and intense electronic dance song it's described by the company as "a funky easy melody with R&B and hip-hop to satisfy the 5 senses of the Korean Public and develop it with American trendy pop music". The boundary-pushing sexy choreography received some pushback from the Korean populace, some of whom found it too provocative, leading to changes in outfits and choreography for later live performances.
- Composers/Producers: Teddy Riley (SNSD - The Boys, Super Junior - Mamacita, Red Velvet - Mosquito)
- Trivia: The album also included an English version of Dr. Feel Good as well as an English version of what would later become Rania's 2nd digital single, Masquerade. The group was announced at debut to be planning a simultaneous Korean and American debut with a planned US tour, something that never materialized. Chinese member Yijo was not able to take part in live promotions for this song due to issues with her work visa (a trend that would continue for DR Music).
- Song: The group began promotions of Masquerade immediately following their promotion of Dr. Feel Good, releasing the Korean version of the song as a new digital single. At this point it's believed that Yijo had left the group due to continuing visa issues. The company describes the song as "typical American pop trendy music with electronic sound".
- Composers/Producers: Teddy Riley (see above)
- Trivia: After the release of this group Teddy Riley released a scathing statement saying that he was done with working with the group: "I wish them the best. It's not the girls I dislike, I love Rania, they would be better with me at SM Entertainment. Their manager does shady business, used me for my music. I love Rania, I just don't like their company business. That's why they are not getting bigger. They don't do business upfront. They used my name every where then back door me on the group. It's ok if they will regret it. If they leave that company, I will sign them up quickly. Please know the facts before attacking me. Attack their company. Such great talent will be wasted if they don't get better support".
- Song: The lead single from the group's first EP "Time to Rock Da Show" this was designed as a song that would lend itself to an electrifying live performance according to the company. With fun outfits and choreography incorporating light-up batons they seem to have hit the mark.
- Composers/Producers: Brave Brothers (Park Bom - Spring, AOA - Miniskirt, Brave Girls - High Heels), Star Wars (GALACTIKA) (After School - Ah, Itzy - Wannabe, WJSN - Butterfly)
- Trivia: This would be the last comeback including Thai member Joy who had to return home after flooding in Thailand affected her parents. After taking a hiatus to deal with her family issues she decided that she was unable to return back to Korea due to disillusionment with the industry and homesickness, however she later redebuted with the Thai girl group GAIA.
- Song: Dark and sultry with a driving beat this intense song would later appear in a remix version with a new lineup for the group's "Start a Fire" EP.
- Composers/Producers: Milo (From the Airport - Chemical Love, Park Gyuri - The Little Prince), Raymond Lothar Slijngaard (no other credits found), Labyron Walton (Black Swan - Let Me Dance, EXO - Beautiful)
- Song: The group's third digital single, this electronic dance tune features lyrics written by hip-hop megastar and member of Epik High Tablo. The song talks about getting over a breakup with the love of fashion. This would be the last comeback including Riko, who left the group to focus on her studies.
- Composers/Producers: Pilgang (Big Bang - Monster, Kang Seung-Yoon - Stealer, Brown Eyed Girls - Who Do You Love), Tablo (Epik High - Lovedrunk, Younha - Umbrella, Sechskies - Three Words)
- Song: The lead single from the group's second EP "Just Go" (also titled "Goodbye is the New Hello") this break-up song was again designed to appeal to an American audience as DR Music was once again making plans for a US tour. This would become Rania's highest charting song, with the single reaching 26th on the Gaon Digital Chart and the album reaching 9th on the Gaon Album Chart with just over 2,500 physical copies sold.
- Composers/Producers: James Reader (no other credits found), Barnaby Pinny (no other credits found)
- Trivia: Following the release of this album DR Music once again began announcing plans for a US Tour. The company made plans with Empire Records, several of Britney Spears managers, and even set up a reality show that was to air on MTV that would follow the girls in the US promotions. There were additional plans for the group to collaborate with Snoop Dogg and 2Chainz. The initial plans were later pushed back, and as far as I can find none of this ended up actually coming to pass.
- Song: A special MV released based on the group's CF deal with the PlayC waterpark.
- Trivia: This would mark the last appearance of Jooyi in a Rania MV, who decided to leave the group along with Saem/Yina. Jooyi would rebrand herself as Cosmic Girl and go on to have a solo career and eventually become a producer with RBW. After this release DR Music would attempt a collaboration with Spanish label INGENIOmedia which would ultimately end in failure after the label released the song being worked on to an infamous Sasaeng fan who would continue to terrorize the group (and Alex in particular) for some time.
- Song: The lead single from the group's third EP "Demonstrate" features a more hip-hop oriented direction for the group which the company highlighted with the addition of Alex Reid "who was active in the U.S., the home of Rap".
- Composers/Producers: Phil Bentley (Anastacia - Resurrection, Echosmith - Lonely Generation, Tiesto - Secrets), Aimée Proal (Nico Suave - Unvergesslich, Youngblood - Running Home to You, Haley Reinhart - Listen), Brian kierulf (Jana Kramer - Just Like in the Movies, Britney Spears - I Run Away)
- Trivia: DR Music continued their push for a western-friendly sound by using a set of composers who from what I can find do not have any other Kpop writing credits. At this point the membership of the group becomes a bit messy. Member Park Sharon joined and left between comebacks, Jooyi and Saem/Yina had left (though Yina would briefly later return), and members Seulji (who later became known as Zi.U) as well as Hyemi (who is currently still a member of Black Swan) joined along with Alex Reid, the first African American Kpop Idol (though not the first Kpop singer of mixed African descent if you count solo artists and hip-hop artists such as Inooni and Yoon Mirae). Though Alex's vocals can be heard in the MV, she does not actually appear in the MV.
- Song: The lead single from the group's fourth EP "Start a Fire" the company describes it as a mix of hip-hop, dance, and retro-pop, with the subject matter dealing with obsessive attention by men and the "tingling sensations of women who want to get out of control". The promotions of this song were also marked by some messiness behind the scenes as Alex Reid was pushed out of the choreography at various points and faced visa issues due to DR Music not providing the proper type. It appears that DR Music may have also scrubbed the original MV from the internet, which is strange because I could've sworn I watched it just last week.
- Composers/Producers: Lena Leon (Stephanie - Prisoner, Hyo - Sober, Everglow - Hush), Krysta Youngs (BTS - On, Oh My Girl - Twilight, Girlkind XJR - Money Talk)
- Trivia: The group rebranded as 'BP Rania' which stood for 'Black Pearl Rania' for this release. More behind-the-scenes drama during the year between Demonstrate and Start a Fire. DR Music began a MakeStar campaign which ended poorly with MakeStar stating "the continued irresponsible behavior and stance taken by the RaNia project creator, and our unwillingness to ignore the inconvenience this is causing to the project participants". Membership changes continued with Yina, previously known as Saem, returning for this comeback, while original members Di, Xia, and T-ae left the group. New members Yumin, Ttabo (a new Chinese member), and Jieun joined the group, making a seven person group again, however Yina would leave the group again before their next comeback. The EP also featured an improved remix version of Killer (audio), and the group promoted the b-side Make Me Ah on live shows (link).
- Song: The lead track from the group's fifth EP "Refresh 7th" (not quite sure where the 7 comes from) this is described as a '90's Retro House track.
- Composers/Producers: Kim Gunwoo (Sunny Days - Blah Blah, CLC -Eighteen, Jisook - Big Dipper)
- Trivia: Controversy over the group's handling of Alex continue with this release, with her disappearing from the choreography or even missing performances entirely because of continued visa issues and cattiness from choreographers being used by the company, with a bit of back and forth where a choreographer claimed Alex refused to learn choreography because she was a rapper, to which Alex replied "If these lies keep magically surfacing, I'll go ahead and come out with the truth. Let it really hit the fan" at which point DR Music reversed course with the statement "The rumors that Alexandra was not willing, able, or present at practice to participate in the full choreography are false. Her level of talent is surpassed only by her work ethic and dedication to the team. It is for those reasons that we gave her the position of leader". This EP also featured the second promoted single Breathe Heavy (Live Stage) billed as a return to Rania's sexy concept, and the track No Dab (audio) which was the only release under the planned Alex and Hyemi sub-unit Rania HEX.
