Computer has started stuttering frequently. After more than 2 weeks of troubleshooting, I believe I've narrowed the issue down to my GPU. I have some questions regarding this.
This is a Skytech Shadow II gaming desktop. I've only had it for about a month and a half now, I've had the issue for over two weeks, coming up on 3.
Specs OS - Windows 10 RAM - 16gbs Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 2700 8 core 3.2ghz 64 bit system Graphics - Nvidia RTX 2060 6gb GDDR6 Motherboard - B450M SSD - 500gb ssd2
I noticed while playing Divinity OS2, that every 5-10 seconds, my game would freeze for about 2-3 seconds, then would resume like normal until it froze again. I initially did the basic things; restart the game, then the computer, cleared up some memory, ran troubleshooter and antivirus programs, and none of these worked. After that, I turned to Google for help, and proceeded to try every bit of advice I could find. This includes, uninstalling GPU drivers and reinstalling them up to date, soft and hard format of the hard drive, command prompt chkdsk, disabled the dynamic tick, disabled the diagnostic policy service, disabled the windows game bar, uninstalled the two most recent Windows updates, and I know there's more I tried but that's all I can remember.
The last thing I've done, is emailed Skytech about the situation, and told them I thought it was an SSD issue, to which they agreed and sent a replacement. I received the replacement and installed it yesterday. After installing and setting up everything, the problem was still present. I used a hardware monitor to check everything, and the only that stood out as odd was the GPU, it had a considerably high spike in the memory usage, and was the only thing to do so. After a quick Google search of how do I know if my GPU is failing, the number one issue stated was frequent lagging or stuttering. So at this point, with near all other options exhausted, I believe I've found the culprit.
This got me wondering, what could've caused this? The obvious answers I found were, overheating, excessive dirt and dust, over-clocking, poor ventilation, and a bad power supply. Now, I don't know if any of these are the reason, and I'm not saying none of them are, but the power supply is the one that came with the computer, I haven't over-clocked my hard drive, it came with several fans already installed, it's in a ventilated area, and it's not even two months old so I doubt the amount dust on there was enough to suffocate it.
The questions I have are related to potential reasons that could've caused the GPU to fail in the first place.
- I have my desktop plugged into an inexpensive (aka cheap) power strip. It's only a power strip, and I don't believe it is a surge protector at all. Could this be a reason?
- Due to my house, living room, and general life situation (read as, I have a two year old,) I play my desktop on 48 inch 4k tv, and not a monitor. Could this be an issue?
- Last question. The only standard reason I feel could be responsible, is overheating. I don't feel as if it is, but if I had to pick a reason, it would be this one. What are some things I can do to reduce the heat further, and also monitor the temperature constantly?
EDIT: Resetting the Bios seems to have fixed the issue. Thank you everyone for all your support and advice. I will be sure to come back to this thread, and try more of your suggestions, if this starts back in the future. Any advice that was given that seems to be smart to go ahead and implement, I will do so. Thank you all again.
Lenovo Yoga c940 Review (14'') from an Apple Macbook Pro convert
The colors! FHD is not quite as many pixels as retina, but it's hard to tell the difference on a 14-inch screen. The colors on my c940 blow away the colors on my 2012 retina pro, so I'm quite happy with that.
2-in-1! the big selling point. I love the garaged pen, it's accurate, convenient, and the touchscreen works nicely. I love just being able to flip and rotate around the screen depending on what I'm doing. I'm planning to use it as a student (hopefully when things get back to normal), and want to use the 2-in-1 functionality for digital handwritten notetaking and pdf annotation. It's also just nice to use presentation mode to watch YouTube, TV, and movies.
Ports - the USB-A port is a life saver and has come in handy many times already! Apple really annoyed me when they did away with literally every useful port back in 2016. I have an HDMI to USB C adapter for when I plug my laptop into the TV to watch stuff, but that is easy to leave in the HDMI cable in the TV so it's not too annoying. I don't really use SD or Ethernet so those are not missed.
Battery life. I mostly use it plugged in nowadays because quarantinelife but i did a few workdays on battery (web surfing, video calls, MS office, streaming video, pdf annotating) and man, this thing can run for so long! I probably got around 11 hours of battery out of it on battery saver mode and lower brightness.
trackpad - it's great! Not quite Apple quality but good enough to where I don't mind. Windows 10 gestures work great.
design - it is truly thin and lightweight, and the thin bezels look great.
fingerprint scanner - fast, accurate, and convenient!
Webcam - pretty good quality for what I need, and the webcam privacy shutter is a nice touch.
Speed - the latest intel processor and graphics means it runs much more quickly than my old macbook for everyday productivity tasks and entertainment.
The keyboard - While I have heard it's better than most other ultrabooks, coming from my 2012 retina pro, it's taken some adjustment to get used to the C940's lower key travel (though I suppose most laptops are going that way nowadays). I have adjusted now, though, and quite enjoy the keyboard! The backlit keys are nice and it is pretty typing accurate after the adjustment period.
Speakers - fantastic, the soundbar hinge is a great design and sounds incredible no matter how you've positioned the 2-in-1.
The display glossiness. I was getting some intense headaches and eye strain while using this computer, and it got so bad I was considering returning the computer. The glossiness also meant there were a lot of fingerprint smudges from touchscreen use, which got annoying. I had to switch back to my Macbook for a while. Luckily I bought a high-quality matte screen protector on Amazon (the brand is Celicious and I would recommend it; installation is tricky but the fit is great and I have taken no noticeable hits to sharpness or brightness with this matte screen protector), and it has saved the laptop for me. The screen no longer reflects glare like crazy, my eye strain is pretty much gone, and the touchscreen is actually nicer to use with finger and with pen because it has more texture.
Windows 10 stability - don't get me wrong, the last windows OS I used was Windows 7 and it worked fine. And I love some of the features of Windows 10 (lock screen functionality, start menu, touchscreen mode). but it is less stable than MacOS. I had two blue screens in my first week with the laptop (unexpected store exception), and Lenovo tech support had me reinstall Windows and set the laptop to only download updates from Lenovo's servers, not Microsoft's. Then another blue screen (critical process died), which I think was caused by a third party antivirus program I'd installed (since uninstalled, no blue screens since for two and a half weeks, fingers crossed). I complained enough to Lenovo tech support that they're sending me a replacement just in case it's a hardware issue, though. Windows 10 just doesn't quite have the stability of MacOS but you get a lot more affordability, customization, and compatibility for it.
Warranty support - my experience with Lenovo basic warranty support has been mediocre. At least three or four times I was told tech support will call me back and I never hear anything, and I have to call back myself. I will be purchasing four years of premium support to avoid this issue in the future.
A very very wonderful laptop and I'm super happy with it! You just have to mind the overly glossy screen's effects on eye strain and headaches. Not regretting the switch from Mac to Windows at all, after a month. I am really hoping it will last me 5-7 years like my macbook pro did!
