Why don't units "give ground" or get pushed back in the newer titles?

In the older titles (RTW, MTW2), units defending a checkpoint or fighting against a larger group of enemies can slowly "give ground" and be pushed back.
In the newer titles, it seems that units can never really give ground. You can have a [thin] line of 100 units against a giant mass of 1000 enemies in a checkpoint, and the line will hold steady while the enemy cannot push the defenders back unless the defenders actually break.
What is responsible for this difference, and what feature in the engine/code/etc causes the ability to be "pushed back"?
Edit:
I just tested this in Attila TW with 4 different units (swordsmen and spearmen) spread out in a line 3-4 men deep (vs different types of enemies, including elites), and the units do not get pushed back when attacked by a large blob of enemies/much larger force. Soldiers sometimes walk around and rearrange themselves in the rear lines, but they do not get pushed back like in earlier games.

Compare this to a test of unit pushing in Medieval 2 TW (Rise of the Three Kingdoms mod), where I had 3 units of elites guarding an entrance and the middle unit and units closer to the center gets pushed to the side by the huge blob of enemies:
