Catgirl Cleric derails every session with cocaine addiction
During session 1, Catgirl Guy decided the most logical thing for his devout cleric to do would be to flirt with the bartender and snort crack-cocaine. This frustrated me due to the bartender secretly being intended to be a minor goddess in disguise, and for crack cocaine to not yet have been introduced to the region by colonists who were still centuries from arriving, but I didn’t want to ruin the fun by saying ‘You can’t do that, that’s not allowed’ about something minor in our first session. Where the problems began was session 2, in which the Paladin decided to take her cocaine. She proceeded to lose it and tried to attack the Paladin, and had to be held back by our Monk. I was worried that this was going to become a greater issue, but I figured I’d resolve it next session by giving the players more time to roleplay and explore the area after the boss fight.
Session 3 actually started off strong. The boss fight went well, with no character deaths and plenty of chances for everyone to shine during the battle. It was afterward that things went south. I gave everyone’s characters a chance to explore the city post-fight and to buy some new gear. I gave several characters important scenes that would go on to become plot threads, particularly the Sorcerer and Paladin. After spending some time exploring, the party was meant to head to the docks to find a sea captain, who was a new player’s character. Instead, the catgirl decided that it was time to be racist to the Paladin for taking her illegal (not setting appropriate) drugs and being an Air Genasi, and literally ran up a tree to pout about it. The party ended up having to spend the better part of half an hour RPing her down, cutting into the time for our new player to introduce her character. I was angry, but I figured this would likely be the end of this addiction nonsense, so I didn’t let it show. I told Catgirl Guy later that it was kinda uncool of him to do that, and he seemed to understand where I was coming from, so I assumed that would be that.
Session 4 dashed my hopes immediately. Catgirl Guy refused to participate in the fight with a cool battleship mimic I had spent hours homebrewing, leaving the party down a member when I had planned for 6 players. Thankfully my players were extremely lucky, and I rolled low on my attacks, so they were able to take down the mimic. I was a good bit more upset about this, because now Catgirl Guy was refusing to even participate in combat as part of a team, which is one of the most baseline things to do in DND. On top of that, he barely engaged with the rest of the session, even as I dropped more lore and worldbuilding in a fun non-combat encounter. I hoped he’d get his shit together, so I decided to give the Paladin more character development and opportunities to be friends with the Cleric during the next few sessions.
And then came session 5. Because of the Paladin’s backstory, the Yakuza was after him, and him specifically, which was meant to cause the other players to rally behind their friend and help him stop trying to be a one-man war for justice. What actually happened was that everyone tried to protect their friend except Catgirl Guy. What he did was cast charm person ON HIS TEAMMATE, THE PALADIN and then tried to hand him off to the Yakuza in exchange for their freedom. Keep in mind, that at this point, the Yakuza had now ascertained that the entire party posed a threat, and were attacking them all. Again, I had set this encounter up for 6 players, and I was now down to 4. At this point I was fed up with Catgirl Guy taking other players’ chances at having their own story arcs, so I decided that one of the two thugs they were fighting, who had already been characterized as the ‘honorable gangster’ type, would find her betrayal of a friend something to be punished by death, even if she was technically helping him. Catgirl Guy proceeds to throw a hissy fit that his plan to sell out another player was thwarted by a lawful evil character having standards, and still refused to fight back, trying to reason with the guy who just slashed his catgirl with a katana while saying ‘she makes him sick’. Then, when the fight was over with and every PC agreed she was more trouble than she was worth, Catgirl ran off and had to be talked down again, during a session that was supposed to reveal more backstory about the Paladin.
I’ve completely lost hope of convincing Catgirl Guy to be considerate of the other players, and I’ve honestly started losing my love for running the campaign. He completely refused to make the most of the setting or to engage with the plot, and I’m beginning to wonder if I gave him too much creative freedom. I honestly might not have even minded as much if he was playing a rogue or a bard, but clerics are meant to be more Lawful or Good characters, not Chaotic Neutral at their most moral.
TL;DR: Catgirl guy uses cocaine and racism as an excuse to derail literally every session thus far.
Edit: So I talked to the rest of the party and to the player. He understands why we’re upset and he swears he won’t straight up betray the party from now on. Additionally, the rest of the party has agreed not to just have their characters put up with his shit. If he starts acting out again I can count on them to put a stop to it. Thankfully my first ‘That Guy’ isn’t as bad as he could be.
