Solutions to common issues when upgrading to Windows 10 November Update.
Windows 10 November Update, also known as version 1511, 10586, upgrades appear to be going smoothly for the most part. I've upgraded about 50 machines so far in The Mad Scientist's Lair / Andrew's Electronics, some from as far back as 2007.
There are a few little concerns which are easily dealt with and some strategies to mitigate nastier problems that less frequently pop up.
The "stuck at 44% bug"
This appears to happen on some systems if an SD card is installed during the update. To avoid it, simply remove your SD card before and during the installation process. You may insert your card after the upgrade is complete.
Some applications may be uninstalled during the upgrade process
Programs that may interfere with stable operation of Windows 10 are automatically removed during the upgrade process. Although this situation isn't ideal, it's far preferred to the way things used to be when the offending app was left installed to crash the entire system. This issue is relatively rare thankfully; most affected are system utilities that hook deep into the system like remote management tools and antivirus programs. Be sure to update these to the latest versions before installing Windows 10 or Windows 10 November Update. If your apps are removed, you will get a list after installation is complete. You'll need to reinstall these with versions that work with Windows 10. If you are running 7 or 8.1, the Get Windows 10 app will alert you if you have an incompatible application that will be uninstalled.
7 and 8.1 users that have reserved their upgrade can manually check compatibility using the method shown at this website: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/manually-run-windows-10-compatibility-appraiser
Instability or loss of device functions after upgrading
Your PC worked fine but now likes to lock up or BSOD. This is almost always a driver problem. Many drivers for Windows 7 and 8.1 work just fine with Windows 10 but some just do not. Run Windows Update and check for any updated drivers before upgrading. Graphics drivers should be manually downloaded from the GPU vendor websites as they are often more up to date than the ones found on Windows Update or the PC manufacturer's website. This is particularly true for NVIDIA cards as NVIDIA publishes updates often. Some laptops use custom video drivers and the generic ones from the GPU vendor sites won't install. Use the PC manufacturer provided video driver only if the generic driver won't install or causes a loss of features. NVIDIA has a Windows 10 specific driver that you'll want to install after your Windows 10 upgrade.
If you're upgrading from 7 or 8.1 this step is even more important as it is more likely that you'll have an older driver that may cause problems.
If your machine is overclocked, be aware that Windows 10 appears in my testing to be a little less tolerant of marginal overclocks. If you're OC'd and having issues, note your OC settings and return to stock clocks, timings and voltages to see if the problem goes away. If it does, you will need to tweak your OC more. I use Intel Burn Test v2 for testing as it is extremely taxing. If you can do a few hours of IBT at max stress, you're almost certainly stable. (It works equally well on AMD CPUs as well.) The rumor that Windows 10 refuses to work on OC'd systems is completely false. I'm typing this out on an overclocked PC running Windows 10.
Poor performance after the upgrade
You need to run Disk Cleanup and defragment your hard drive, preferably before and after the upgrade but certainly after. Users of SSDs are not entirely off the hook, they too should run Disk Cleanup and use the Windows built in defrag utility to run an SSD specific optimization. This doesn't defrag the SSD, which is bad for it, but runs the TRIM command instead when Windows detects an SSD. For best performance, do this before and after your Windows 10 upgrade.
I recommend using the "Clean System Files" option in Disk Cleanup. This removes many more unnecessary files but at the cost of not being able to uninstall Windows 10 or Windows 10 November Update without reinstalling using a previous version of Windows install media. It will save you 15-20GB of space.
It goes without saying that if you suspect your system has been infected with malware or you suspect it has "Windows rot", you should back up your files and perform a clean install to avoid potentially serious stability and/or performance impairments. If your PC is running poorly before the upgrade, chances are it will run as poorly or even worse afterwards. Do a clean install if you have doubts. Nothing and I mean NOTHING restores performance and security quite like a good nuke and pave.
I can't see Upgrade to version 1511 in Windows Update!
This occurs if it has been less than 30 days since you installed Windows 10. This is to allow you to revert to your old Windows install within 30 days of installing Windows 10 as you can only roll back one version. If you wish to install it, you'll need to manually upgrade using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
My computer is pretty recent. I can't boot from my USB stick I made with the Media Creation Tool even after going into the boot menu and selecting my stick from the menu.
You need to turn off Secure Boot in the firmware setup menu. Consult your system or motherboard documentation for instructions. Turn Secure Boot back on once Windows is installed.
My computer is a little older, 3-5 years old maybe. My BIOS/UEFI doesn't have Secure Boot (or it's confirmed to be off) yet I still can't boot from my USB stick I made with the Media Creation Tool even after going into the boot menu and selecting my stick from the menu.
You probably have a PC with broken UEFI firmware or one of those awful hybrid BIOSes with a sick joke of a UEFI compatibility layer (Gigabyte and HP I'm looking at you!) and no matter what you do your PC won't boot from the USB stick you made with the media creation tool.
If so, you need a USB stick that does not have UEFI thus bypassing the broken UEFI firmware and using the old BIOS boot instead.
You'll need a program called Rufus to make your custom USB stick and the latest Windows 10 ISO image.
To get the ISO, go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Note that if you're on Windows, you won't see the ISO download link at this site, you'll be forced into the media creation tool. You'll need to visit the site on a Mac, Linux or use a browser extension to fake your user agent string to something not Windows to get an ISO link. Select your language and CPU type and download your giant DVD ISO file. The ISO has both Pro and Home versions and will ask you which one you want to install during the install process so be sure to select the edition you have a product key or digital entitlement for.
Once you get the ISO, you'll need Rufus and a USB stick at least 4GB in size. This process will erase your USB stick so be sure to back up anything on it you want to keep.
Download Rufus here: https://rufus.akeo.ie/
Your Rufus should be set up like this: http://imgur.com/vUUazGh
Bad stuff happened and I'm pretty sure it's Windows 10's fault. I've posted here and or elsewhere but what I really want is the damn bug fixed!
Well, you're kind of in luck. The Windows Feedback app that used to only be in the Windows Insider builds is now in the main release. Here you can submit your bug reports and general gripes. You should use this for ANY concern as far as I'm concerned. Presumably if a solid pattern arises that indicates an actual bug, they can fix it faster. It's not quite as nice as having an open source community of devs but it's a step in the right direction for getting problems fixed faster as knowing of an issue is a prerequisite for actually fixing it.
Added loss of device function to the instability section. Two problems, same cause.
Added a mention of how much space you can save by choosing the "Clean System Files" option in Disk Cleanup. Thanks to Waitaha for that one.
Added steps to deal with completely FUBAR UEFI and Hybrid BIOSes.
Added a reminder to use Windows Feedback to report any problems.
